Asian Ginseng

Asian Ginseng is one of the most economically, and historically important plants. It has been used for thousands of years and appears in the first known Chinese Materia Medica (thought to have been written during the Han Dynasty, 220 BCE). Ginseng root is native to the northern mountainous regions of Korea, China, and parts of the Russian Federation. Cultivation of Panax ginseng in Korea started around 11 B.C. by transplantation of wild ginseng. Panax ginseng cultivated in Korea (Korean ginseng) is harvested after 4-6 years of cultivation, and it is classified into three types depending on how it is processed: (a) fresh ginseng (less than 4 yr old; can be consumed in it’s fresh state); (b) white Ginseng (4-6 yr old; dried after peeling); and (c) red ginseng (harvested when 6 yr old, and then steamed and dried). For these purposes we will discuss the use of "white ginseng." Panax is derived from the latin "Pan" or All, and "Akos" or Cure. The sound-Gin stands for the word Man in Chinese, and Seng for the term essence or that which underlies all outward appearances. Ginseng roots physically resemble the human body. According to Chinese beliefs, Ginseng is the representation of the essence of earth that dwells in a root.

Cola

Cola nut trees have been an important part of African culture for centuries, particularly in Nigeria and West Africa. Africans have long used the pods to relieve nausea, and hangover. The wood is also used to build houses, and boats. The nuts are traditionally used as a stimulant and the roots to clean teeth and sweeten breath. Cola nut plays a significant role in traditional African hospitality and social ceremonies. Friends even send nuts as invitations or congratulations. The name for cola drinks is derived from this plant, although the cola nut is no longer used as an ingredient in most commercial drinks.

Eleuthero

This plant is found in North East China, Eastern Russia, Korea and Japan. It is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to expel “Wind Dampness”, to strengthen the sinews and bones, transform dampness and reduce swelling. It is classified and responsible in large part for the coining of the term, Adaptogen; describing a class of plants and substances that increases an organisms “non specific resistance” to stress of various kinds. There is a slight problem with adulteration of this plant medicine in the US as many companies marketing this herb are actually selling species of Eleutherococcus other than senticosus, or selling the herb Periploca. It is important to know your source and look for products which are screened for proper identity, purity and concentration.

Ginkgo

Ginkgo is the oldest surviving species of tree and is often referred to as "the living fossil". Fossil records indicate that it probably originated during the Permian period about 250 million years ago. The tree ranged worldwide during the Paleozoic era and went into decline before the Ice Age, eventually retreating to the mountain forests of China. Because Ginkgo is the only living species of its family speaks of the tree’s hardiness. The first green growth to emerge in the city of Hiroshima after the atomic blast was Ginkgo. The properties of Ginkgo were first recorded around 2,800 BC. In traditional Chinese medicine the leaf was used to support the respiratory system. It’s truly amazing that Ginkgo, an ancient tree seeded millions of years ago, has survived to impart such a profound influence on human physiology.
